The Town of Dartmouth is constantly looking for ways to improve its open space to create the best experience for residents. With this in mind, the Town is working to connect and create additional trails at Cornell Pond in North Dartmouth.

The goal of this project is to develop design plans for an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible walking trail with footbridges that would connect Cornell Pond’s public parking area, located on Old Fall River Road, to the adjacent DNRT Howland Reserve property line.

As part of the proposed design, engineering consultants would assess the pond's spillways and ensure that the installation of footbridges would not adversely affect the existing infrastructure.

Currently, much of the Town’s open space at the property is inaccessible to the public from Old Fall River Road because of the spillways and wetlands. By completing this project, the Town hopes to improve the safety, accessibility, and enjoyability of this public property for recreational purposes.

It is expected that this project will result in a design for approximately 600 linear feet of ADA accessible trails.

The design of the walking trails is expected to cost $120,000 and be paid for with funding through the MassTrails Grant Program and Town Meeting appropriation. Town Meeting Members voted to approve grant match funding for this project at the 2024 Spring Town Meeting.

The Town of Dartmouth will undertake this project, pending grant funding approval for the remaining costs associated with the engineering design.
